mini-break to an urban farm in Kansas City

A lot of friends from the past, I’m discovering, have taken to urban farming. I don’t think anyone would have guessed that I, too, would be an urban farmer but things change- priorities change… and sometimes you want to have chickens in your backyard. Last weekend I got together with a college friend who just got back from working in Germany, and we decided to take a spontaneous road trip to Kansas City to visit another college friend. It worked out to have a girls’ weekend, as her husband was out of town. We contacted another one of our girls in Long Beach to take the red eye out to hang out with us for a day, but I guess she had some depositions or whatever to tend to.

After a day around town, back to the urban homestead where we gathered a freshly-laid egg from one of the hens, harvested basil, kale and tomatoes for a homemade pizza dinner, and played with the kittens, chickens, and goats.  (click here for a video of the chickens!)

Homemade pizza from the garden and good conversation- what more could a girl ask for?
